January Family Day

010712-fd-january506px72dpiSaturday, January 7th was our third Family Day event — and the most successful one yet!

Throughout the day, dozens of visitors explored the arts and cultures of Asia, beginning with an exploration of our second floor exhibition, Chess Masterpieces: Highlights from the Dr. George and Vivian Dean Collection, which features sets from China, Japan, Cambodia, and India. Chess has a rich history on the Asian continent, thought to have originated in India about 1,500 years ago, then spreading north and east across the continent. Kids and grown ups alike marveled over the intricate carving that is typical of Asian chess sets, and learned about how the game developed and changed in each country.

Families then headed upstairs, where they crafted origami versions of objects and animals that have been associated with chess. And in honor of the Chinese New Year on January 23rd, kids rang in the Year of the Dragon by creating brightly-colored “scratch art” versions of the mythical beasts.
