With kids out of school, what better way to escape the muggy Saint Louis summer than to check out one of the World Chess Hall of Fame’s new family backpacks? Available free to WCHOF members and for a $5 donation to non-members, each of the three themed backpacks is packed with activities for kids ages 3-12 and their grownups! Adults must surrender a valid driver’s license for the duration that the backpacks are checked out.

Today, we’re taking a look at the “Kings and Queens” backpack. If you have some experience with chess, you’ll know that the king and queen are, respectively, the most important and the most powerful pieces on the board. This backpack is filled with books, games, toys, and “make and take” art projects that explore the worlds of their real-life counterparts:

  • Read a legend about a king and the important lesson he learns thanks to a wise man and a chessboard in David Birch’s The King’s Chessboard

  • Dress up in a kingly (or queenly) robe, wield a scepter, and hold court

  • Top off your regal attire by decorating a colorful “magic scratch” crown

  • Try to wake up a slew of sleeping royals in Sleeping Queens, a fun card game

  • Create an origami crown that fits into the palm of your hand

  • Make your own story come to life using king and queen hand puppets

We hope you’ll come to check out the Kings and Queens backpack soon—it’s a royally good time!
