A Queen Within Exhibition Preview, Christie's NY
On June 4th, the World Chess Hall of Fame previewed its fashion exhibition opening in October 2013, A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, Fashion and Chess, at Christie’s New York.
Party-goers such as Simon Doonan, Nadja Swarovski, Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty of SUNO, and BAZAAR editor-at-large Derek Blasberg got a sneak peek of the exhibition, which examines the archetypes of the queen and how these archetypes connect the seemingly disparate realms of chess and fashion. A Queen Within features designs by Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Jean Paul Gaultier and Maison Martin Margiela.
“Every chess piece has a different personality,” explains curator Sofia Hedman, “We took the themes associated with the Queen—the heroine theme, the mother nature theme, and the enchantress theme—and selected pieces to reflect [them]… When we began to research how this kind of thinking has an influence on fashion, we knew that there was an important story to tell.”
Coinciding with the opening of the exhibition, the World Chess Hall of Fame will host a Queen’s Gala in partnership with Saks Fifth Avenue, transforming its Plaza Frontenac location into an evening fit for a queen (and a few kings). Tickets are on sale now—click here to find out more about the Queen’s Gala and reserve your seats today and stay tuned for more on A Queen Within and our upcoming exhibitions!
